What role can athletes, sports health and communication leaders play in mental health and global health?
We all have heard the stories of former NFL players and other sports battling CTE and related mental health effects. A cancer diagnosis has a huge mental health impact on most patients, families, and caregivers. People in abusive relationships also have to deal with major mental health effects.
Racial/ethnic, gender, and sexual minorities often suffer from poor mental health outcomes due to multiple factors including inaccessibility of high quality mental health care services, cultural stigma surrounding mental health care, discrimination, and overall lack of awareness about mental health. This is also a global health disparity. Mental health disorders are often neglected, especially in low- and middle-income countries, which have limited resources to tackle mental health challenges. In addition to causing significant burden within the lives of individuals, families, and societies, mental health disorders increase the risk for comorbid conditions.
The sports and mental health session at the Harvard global health summit featuring some of the world leading experts in sports behavior, news makers, communication leadership and cancer is focused on mental health. Expected outcomes from this session include publications and collaborations with potential new funding for advancing innovative approaches to address mental health for athletes, former players, cancer patients/families/care-givers and global mental health disparities.
